When you search for things to do in Flam Norway you will find a lot of lists, but nothing really prepares you for how special this little village is. I arrived here during my 10 day cruise that included Norway, Iceland, Amsterdam and Bruges, and Flam ended up being the highlight of the whole trip.
For me it was one of the most beautiful places in Norway, the spot where I finally understood what the fjords are all about and how spectacular the nature in this country really is. I had a full day with some wow experiences, even if the weather was a bit moody.
It rained for half the day and the views were not at their best, but the second half was much kinder and gave me the chance to truly enjoy Flam.

Where to stay in Flam
Accommodation in Flam is limited because the village is so small. Hotels and guesthouses fill up quickly, especially in summer. If you cannot find something available, a good option is Aurlandsvangen, a charming village only 10 km away. Many travelers search directly for where to stay in FLam, but it is smart to also look around the fjord for cozy cabins or family run guesthouses with great views.
These are my recommendations for places to stay in Flam or nearby, depending on your budget:
- Flåm Holiday Home – a spacious and modern apartment with 5 bedrooms, stunning views, great amenities, and a convenient location close to the Flåm Railway.
- Hotel Aurlandsfjord. – a cozy family-run stay just steps from the fjord, offering comfortable rooms, free WiFi, great views, and easy access to Flåm and Stegastein.
- Wangen Apartments by Fjord Resort – offers modern, well-equipped stays with stunning views, excellent amenities, and a prime location near Flåm and Stegastein.
Things to do in Flam Norway in just one day
Naeroyfjord Cruise, A MUST DO
One of the most unforgettable things to do in Flam Norway is joining a Naeroyfjord cruise. Since we couldn’t find available tickets for the departure from Flam cruise port, we had to take a bus to the small village of Gudvangen. The ride takes about 20 minutes and even passes through an impressive 11 km tunnel.
The most spectacular section of the Naeroyfjord cruise actually starts in Gudvangen. As you sail closer to Flam, the landscapes become less dramatic, so you’ll need to decide: do you want to enjoy the most beautiful views at the beginning of your trip, or save them for the end?
The ferry itself is a large, fully electric vessel, which means it runs smoothly and quietly. However, it can get crowded, so if you want a window seat, make sure you are among the first in line. Inside the ship, you’ll find modern facilities, a café where you can grab coffee or snacks, and of course restrooms. Everything is set up for a comfortable journey.

Fjords in Flam, Norway
Weather makes a huge difference. We had a rainy day, so our raincoats and umbrellas came in handy. We spent most of the cruise inside, but still managed to step outside on the deck to admire the views. And what views! Tiny villages tucked at the foot of mountains, countless waterfalls streaming down the cliffs, and one of Norway’s most scenic fjords, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Honestly, I’ve never seen so many waterfalls in one place.
Prices for the Naeroyfjord cruise vary depending on the season and how early you book. I used Norway’s Best website, but you can also find tours on other platforms, including GetYourGuide. If it’s your first booking with them, don’t forget you can use my discount code in their app for 5% off: RALUBELUTRAVELS5
We paid 1,600 NOK for two people (around 135 euros), and that price already included the bus transfer to Gudvangen. Just remember that costs can change a lot depending on the season, availability, and how early you book your tickets.

Viking Valley in Gudvangen – What to Do in Flam from Cruise Ship
Right next to the pier in Gudvangen you’ll find Viking Valley, a reconstructed Viking village. It’s the perfect answer to what to do in Flam from cruise ship, especially if you want more than just fjord views.
Here you can explore longhouses, see people dressed like real Vikings, and learn about daily life in the past. When you visit Flam, adding a stop at Viking Valley gives your trip a cultural twist in one of the most scenic places in Norway. The backdrop of steep mountains and waterfalls makes the experience even more magical; it really feels like stepping back in time, in the middle of a fairytale setting.

Flåm Railway – The Most Scenic Train Ride in Norway
My favorite activity in Flam was without doubt the Flåm Railway, also known as Flamsbana. It’s one of those things to do in Flam Norway that you simply can’t miss.
The train climbs from the fjords up to the mountains, passing waterfalls and steep valleys. It’s not just the most spectacular railway in Norway, but one of the most beautiful train journeys in the entire world.

Flamsbana train crossing steep tracks on the way to Myrdal station

Flam train station
The ride starts in the small village of Flam and takes you to Myrdal station at 867 meters altitude. In just 20 kilometers, the train conquers one of the steepest normal-gauge railway lines ever built – a true engineering masterpiece.
The round trip takes about two hours. Along the way you’ll see tunnels carved by hand, alpine meadows, traditional houses, and dozens of waterfalls. The highlight is Kjosfossen waterfall, 93 meters high, where the train stops for a few magical minutes so you can take photos and videos.

Flamsbana train climbing through mountains and waterfalls in Flam Norway
A useful tip: book your Flamsbana train tickets weeks in advance, especially in summer, because they sell out quickly. I was lucky to catch a spot, and missing this would have been a huge regret.
And one more trick: when boarding in Flam, sit on the right-hand side facing the direction of travel, near a window that opens. That’s where you’ll get the best shots, guaranteed.
Flam Railway Museum- A Free Stop When You Visit Flam
Right next to the train station you’ll find the Flam Railway Museum, a free exhibition that’s worth a quick stop. It may be small, but it adds extra context to your visit Flam experience.
Inside you’ll see old locomotives, train models, and plenty of photos showing how the railway was built. There’s even a reconstructed classroom and some vintage uniforms that give you a glimpse of daily life in Norway decades ago.
It won’t take more than 30 minutes to explore, but it’s one of those things to do in Flam Norway that combines history with curiosity. And since it’s free, there’s really no reason to skip it.
Souvenir Shops – What to Do in Flam Besides the Big Attractions
Even though Flam is a small village, you’ll still find a few souvenir shops worth exploring. The best known is Mall of Norway, where you can buy everything from troll statues and magnets to wool sweaters, hats, keychains, and even Christmas ornaments.
It’s a fun way to spend some time if you wonder what to do in Flam beyond the fjord cruise or the railway. When you visit Flam, browsing for a quirky souvenir is part of the charm. After all, small details like these complete the list of things to do in Flam Norway.
Flam Bakery
There aren’t many places to eat in Flam, but Flam Bakery is one spot you shouldn’t skip. We weren’t even that hungry after the cruise, yet the sweets in the window looked too good to resist.
Here you’ll find sandwiches, pizza, coffee, juices, and a wide selection of pastries. My top tip? Try anything with vanilla, Norwegians really know how to do pastry, and everything is delicious.
Expect a line though, because it seems every traveler who visit Flam is drawn in by the smell and the look of those desserts. It’s one of those small but memorable things to do in Flam Norway.
Other things to do in Flam:
Borgund Stave Church
If you have more time when you visit Flam, consider a trip to Borgund Stave Church, one of the best-preserved wooden churches in Norway. Built in the 12th century, it looks like something out of a Viking saga, with dragon carvings and a unique medieval design.
Even though it’s about 1.5 hours away by car, many travelers combine it with a road trip through the fjords. It’s not only a piece of history but also a cultural treasure that shows how Norway’s rural communities lived and worshipped centuries ago. Definitely one of the most unique things to do in Flam Norway for history lovers.
Flam Zipline
For a more adventurous option, the Flam Zipline is a must. It’s actually the longest zipline in Scandinavia, stretching over 1,300 meters and offering breathtaking views of valleys and waterfalls. Even if I didn’t try it myself, it looks like the perfect adrenaline kick in between fjord cruises and train rides.
The zipline starts near Vatnahalsen and ends close to the Rallarrosa Goat Cheese Farm, so you can combine adventure with a taste of local cheese. If you’re searching for what to do in Flam beyond the usual attractions, this is a thrilling choice.
Stegastein Viewpoint
Just a short drive from Flam, Stegastein Viewpoint offers one of the best panoramic views of the Aurlandsfjord. The platform juts 30 meters out from the mountainside and hangs 650 meters above the fjord, so the perspective is jaw-dropping. It’s an easy half-day trip and a favorite for photographers.
Even if I didn’t make it there, I can tell it’s one of the most scenic stops in the area. Adding Stegastein to your list of things to do in Flam Norway is a great way to balance the fjord-level perspective with a bird’s-eye view.
Things to know before visiting Flam
How to get to Flam?
I personally arrived in Flam during my cruise, which was the most relaxing way to get here. But there are a few other options too. Many travelers come by train, taking the Bergen or Oslo line to Myrdal and then changing to the famous Flåmsbana.
You can also drive, and the roads are full of tunnels, fjords and mountain views. Another option is to take a bus from nearby towns like Aurland or Gudvangen. No matter how you choose to arrive, the journey itself is already part of the adventure.

Is Flam expensive?
Yes, Flam is not a budget destination, and prices for food, drinks, and souvenirs are higher than in many other places. Even a quick snack can feel pricey. But here’s the thing: you don’t need dozens of paid attractions, because the main experiences: the Flåmsbana Railway and the cruises from the Flam cruise port are the real highlights.
They might not be cheap, but they are once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the kind of memories you’ll look back on and think every penny was worth it.
What should I pack for Flam?
Layers are key. Even in summer you’ll need a raincoat, umbrella, and warm clothes for evenings. Comfortable shoes are a must, because even if Flam is small, you’ll do a lot of walking. If you plan to hike, pack proper gear.
And don’t forget your camera; between fjords, waterfalls, and trains, you’ll want to capture every second. A power bank is also useful because you’ll take more photos and videos than you think.
