Visiting Santorini in one day is a real challenge, especially if it happens while you’re on a cruise. I was recently on a stunning 10-day Mediterranean cruise with Santorini as our first stop. I had long wanted to visit one of Greece’s most famous islands, and this was the perfect opportunity.

The moment I saw the hundreds of white houses perched on the cliffs, with the Aegean Sea stretching out in all its grandeur, I was instantly captivated by Santorini’s unique beauty.

Although it gets incredibly crowded in the summer, the island is full of Instagram-worthy spots and dreamlike views. Of course, one day in Santorini isn’t enough to enjoy everything it offers, but you have time to visit the main attractions and relax at a café while taking in the panoramic scenery.

How to get to Santorini from the cruise ship

If you arrive in Santorini by cruise ship, you’ll likely dock at the old cruise port of Santorini, near Fira or Athinios Port. Since the cruise ship is too large to anchor at these ports, you must take a tender boat.

Register a few days in advance to secure a spot on one of the first boats so you can make the most of your day in Santorini.

Upon arrival, you’ll receive a boat number and listen for announcements from the captain over the radio, who will call out each boat. Once you reach the Santorini Greece cruise port, you’ll find various options for ascending the mountain, depending on which one of the cruise ports in Santorini the tender boat takes you to.

This variety of options caters to different preferences and provides flexibility for your visit.

Where to stay in Santorini

Of course, if you’re arriving in Santorini on a cruise ship, you won’t need accommodation since you’ll return to your stateroom. However, if that’s not the case and you’re visiting independently or missing your boarding, you’ll need to know the accommodation options in Santorini and the areas to consider.

When choosing accommodation in Santorini, consider the unique appeal of each area. Fira offers vibrant nightlife and stunning caldera views, while Oia is renowned for its enchanting sunsets, terraced white buildings, and blue-domed churches.

Here are some hotel options in Santorini based on budget:

Budget-friendly: Lotza Studios – Oia, pool, sea view, various room types, breakfast included.

Mid-range: Vino Houses—Oia offers apartments with a jacuzzi and pool, minimalist decor, and an excellent, delicious breakfast included.

Luxury: Canaves Epitome—Oia has a huge pool, fitness center, apartments with private mini pools, spectacular views, restaurant, parking, and breakfast included.

Getting to Fira in Santorini

If the tender boat takes you to Athinios Port, you can catch a bus to Fira, an affordable option, or take a taxi, although taxis can be expensive. You can also rent a car or arrange a transfer or island tour, providing a range of transportation options to suit your budget.

If you arrive at the old port in Fira, the best option is to take the cable car. In just a few minutes, you’ll be at the top. It costs 6 euros per person, and you might have to wait in line, but the process moves quickly.

The descent is slower. Another option is to climb the nearly 600 steps on foot. Riding donkeys is still practiced, but I do not recommend it. It’s sad to see these poor animals being exploited for tourism, especially when alternative options are available.

The best time to visit Santorini is between late April and early November. Temperatures will be mild and pleasant, great for traveling and relaxing.

June through August are the busiest and hottest summer months. Tourist spots are packed with people, and prices are higher.

If you want a quieter time, go in late spring (April to May) or early fall (September to October). The weather is still lovely, but there will be fewer people.
