A full day is the minimum, because the distances are longer than they look on the map and it took us around two hours to reach the first village. You can explore the Cotswolds on your own, but taking a tour like I did makes everything much easier and stress free. Some villages in the Cotswolds are more famous than others, but Bibury stands out completely. It is often described as the most beautiful village in England, and once you arrive, it is very clear why.

The houses sit on a gentle slope along the main street, one more photogenic than the other, many of them covered in climbing roses and framed by flowers and trees. There are tiny cafes, local art shops and old stone cottages that make the whole village feel like a postcard. I ended up stopping every few meters because another cottage or flower bush looked too pretty to ignore
What I loved most was how peaceful everything felt. You can walk down the hill, cross the little bridge over the River Windrush and just watch the water flowing slowly through the village. It is the kind of spot where you automatically take ten photos even when you promise yourself you won’t.
The main landmark here is St John the Baptist Church, the most famous church in the village, and you can visit it for free. It is beautiful, quiet and full of that old English charm. Right on the High Street you will also find the oldest pharmacy in England, dating back to 1734, which is honestly wild to think about. Burford has this mix of beauty, history and cozy corners that makes it a perfect first taste of the villages in the Cotswolds.
Second stop – Bibury, often called the most beautiful village in the world
Bibury looks unreal from the moment you step in. It is often called the most beautiful village in England, and in 2025 Forbes even named it the most beautiful village in the world. Arlington Row is the main reason everyone comes here: a line of old stone cottages built in 1380 as a wool store and turned into homes in the 1600s.
It gets crowded, yes, but the view is worth the wait. You basically spend half your time here waiting for people to move out of your photo, but trust me, the shot is worth every second.
The River Coln passes right in front, with swans and ducks moving around slowly, and the whole place feels calm even when there are people everywhere.
There are a few other spots to check out, like the Swan Hotel, the Trout Farm with its small handmade souvenir shop, and the tiny Saxon Church. My tour included lunch at the Swan Hotel, but I would not add the lunch option again.
The waiting time was too long and you end up wasting the minutes you could spend walking around the village. It is better to grab a quick snack from the Trout Farm and keep exploring, because Bibury has a way of making you stop for photos every few steps. If you skip lunch at the Swan Hotel, you earn at least an extra half hour of wandering and taking photos. And trust me, in Bibury every minute counts.
Third and last stop on our Cotswolds itinerary: Stow-on-the-Wold
Stow on the Wold is the highest village in the whole Cotswolds, and you really feel it the moment you arrive. The air is a bit fresher, the views open up more, and the whole place feels calm and spacious (it’s actually the biggest of the three). The village has a long history as a market town, especially during the wool trade, because it sat at the crossroads of important routes. That’s why the Market Square is so large compared to the rest of the village.
Around the square you’ll notice those super narrow alleys that were used during sheep fairs. They’re so tight that only one sheep could pass at a time, which made counting them easy back in the day. St Edward’s Church is close by, and the Yew Tree Door looks exactly as dreamy as everyone says, framed perfectly by the old yew trees. People say this doorway actually inspired the Lord of the Rings creators.
The Porch House Inn is not next to the square. It’s a bit farther away, and it claims to be the oldest pub in England. Stow also has cute chocolate shops with handmade sweets, cheese shops with local products, and The Borzoi Bookshop, a cozy little bookstore that’s worth stepping into.
On Digbeth Street you’ll also find a small craft beer café and bottle shop, plus lots of cafés that are warm, cute and perfect for a break during one day in the Cotswolds or a Cotswolds day trip. It’s the kind of village where you think you’ll stay a few minutes and end up walking around much longer.
